Ms. Jessica’s Neighborhood: MLK Middle and The Delta Gems
One of the best part of this job is hanging out with our listeners in the community. This weekend, I had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the students at Martin Luther King Middle School and The Delta Gems.
Martin Luther King Middle School was packed on Saturday for their Father/Son Basketball Tournament and Fish Fry. Fathers and sons competed for prizes and everyone enjoyed the fish fry (and Funnel Cakes…I can’t forget the funnel cakes!) EOGs are right around the corner and MLK is in need of volunteers to proctor. If you can donate some time, give them a call at 980-343-0698 and tell them that Ms. Jessica sent ya! Shout out to the Parent Advocate Robin Brown for putting this great event together and for inviting me out!
I also had the opportunity to be a panelist for the Delta Gems career panel on Saturday. It was an honor to be among Charlotte’s best teachers, lawyers, police officers, doctors, marketing experts, and bankers. Shout out to the young ladies that attended this program and to the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta for having me! If you want me to come out to your event, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. xoxo, Ms. Jessica “The Girl Next Door” (follow the fun on IG, Snapchat, and Twitter @heymsjessica)
Delta GEMS is a natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of that program. Delta GEMS is made of African-American young ladies aged 14-18 and/or in grades 9 through 12. GEMS invites young women who have potential, but need guidance, support, and skills to achieve success. The program focuses on young women who are interested in developing leadership skills; who are actively pursuing college and/or career options; who need encouragement and support in the pursuit of higher learning.
