No Limit Larry & Morning Maddhouse

Weekdays 5:50am - 10:00am

Summer break can be a chance to relax, regroup, and refresh. It can also be a way to make some quick money or a chance to jumpstart potential careers via internships.

That’s right, college students around the country are competing with one another for internships which can be very intimidating and discouraging. I watched in slight envy on social media as my classmates where interning at major companies and traveling the world, wondering when it would be my turn. I decided to be proactive and persistent and emailed my resume to everyone I could at Power 98. A few weeks later, I was called in for an interview and after months of watching Netflix at home, I was selected to be an intern with No Limit Larry and the Morning MaddHouse crew!

To say I was nervous on my first day would be an understatement. I work at the radio station at school, Hampton University, so I was familiar with the equipment in the station. However, that’s where the familiarity ended. The first major change I had to adjust to was the time. Since I’m interning at a morning show that starts at 5:50 am, I have to be at the station at 5:30 am meaning I have to wake up at 4:30 am. That’s a big adjustment for someone who’s used to waking up at 1:00 pm everyday. There are two advantages to waking up super early however, absolutely no traffic on the way there and I’m done by 10:00 am so I can go home and nap!

At the beginning of my first day, I nervously and quietly shadowed for a couple of hours to learn the ins and outs of the show. By the end of the day I was much more relaxed and had been put to work! For the first day I mainly answered phones, gathered information from contest winners, and logged the winners information in the computer. By the second day, I was still answering phones but I was also helping to plan the run of the show, tallying votes for the #MHGreatDebate, and taking photos and videos for the official Instagram page.

While this is still an internship and I’m working, I’m also having a ton of fun. Every member of the Morning MaddHouse Crew has been incredibly welcoming to me and super helpful. Every morning they come in full of energy (although I’m not entirely sure how), which makes for a great working environment, especially for a non-morning person like myself. I’ve only been working for a few days and I’ve already had some great opportunities. I met comedian Deon Cole and over the weekend, I attended the Big 3 Basketball Tournament! I was also able to speak on-air both days, which was definitely the coolest thing I’ve done so far!

It’s only the beginning of this incredible internship and I can’t wait to share my experience with you all!

*Intern Pro Tip*

Write down EVERYTHING you do! This will be super helpful when you have to evaluate your internship or add your specific duties to your resume. If it’s written down, you won’t have to search your memory weeks after your internship is over.
