$11 Million Pedestrian Bridge To Connect South End To Uptown?
While it has yet to be set into motion, Charlotte leaders held a public meeting Thursday to build a bridge that would connect the Rail Trail in the south end and uptown across 277. At the public meeting, city leaders asked for public input on two different potential designs: One featuring a single span, the other featuring a double span.
“I think this is going to be a beautiful project, something that people will be able to iconically say, ‘You know, oh I know where that bridge is because here’s the 277 Rail Trail Bridge,'” Leaver said. “And people will be able to use that as a landmark for the future.”
The $11 million projects is funded in part by the City of Charlotte ($3.1 million), North Carolina Department of Transportation ($3.3 million), and Mecklenburg County ($3.1 million). The remaining $1.5 million is funded privately, according to the City of Charlotte’s website.
Leaver said construction is expected to start in early 2021, with the goal of being open to the public by early 2023. What do you all think about this bridge being built in uptown?
