In a massive prison system shakeup, more than two dozen Baltimore jail guards have been charged with abusing their power.
The indictments, which were handed down Tuesday, accuse 25 correctional officers of assaulting and threatening prisoners; tampering with evidence; and falsifying legal documents, according to Baltimore City Attorney Marilyn Mosby. The guards have been suspended since 2018, Mosby revealed.
The charges are just the latest in a lone line of scandals to rock the Maryland corrections system. In 2015, the state shut down a Baltimore jail after stories of horrible conditions, corruption and criminal activity surfaced. Two years before that, federal agents uncovered a smuggling operation in a city jail, where they also discovered that a gang leader had impregnated four female guards.
