Coronavirus Information Report

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - APRIL 23: A garbage collector is seen wearing face shield and facemask on April 23, 2020 in Manila, Philippines. The Philippines' main island Luzon, which includes the capital Manila, remains on lockdown as authorities continue to struggle with the growing number of COVID-19 cases. Land, sea, and air travels have been suspended, while government work, schools, businesses, and public transportation have been ordered to shutdown in a bid to keep some 55 million people at home. The Philippines' Department of Health has so far confirmed 6,981 cases of the coronavirus in the country, with at least 462 recorded fatalities. (Photo by Ezra Acayan/Getty Images)

Following reports that an active ingredient in heartburn medicine might help treat COVID-19, hoarders have wasted no time in clearing store shelves of the products. Retailers like Walgreen’s, CVS and Amazon say their stock of Pepsid AC and other brands have been snatched up in the last two days after it was reported that famotidine, an antacid found in Pepsid AC and generic brands, was being used in a trial by Northwell Health researchers in New York.

Researcher Kevin Tracey, who notes the drug has not yet been proven to be effective, says Northwell officials initially attempted to keep the trials quiet to avoid a hoarding situation. “If we talked about this to the wrong people or too soon, the drug supply would be gone,” Tracey said.
