And on this day 33 years ago “A Different World” premiered on NBC. The popular sitcom was a spin-off of “The Cosby Show” and centered around a group of students attending the fictional HBCU “Hillman College“. “A Different World” gave us memorable characters including Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell), Kimberly Reese (Charnele Brown), and “Freddie” Brooks (Cree Summer). Jada Pinkett-Smith joined the cast as Lena James in season 5.
