Vance High School finally has a new name. The Charlotte Mecklenburg school will be renamed for civil rights attorney Julius L. Chambers.

The decision comes after community discussion about the history of Zebulon Baird Vance, a former NC Governor, lawyer, and military officer that owned slaves.

Julius Chambers founded the 1st integrated law firm in North Carolina.  He received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina Central University where he served as the student body president and graduated Summa Cum Laude.  He went to law school at the University of North Carolin at Chapel Hill where he was the 1st African American to gain membership in the university’s highest honorary society, the Order of the Golden Fleece.
