Union Academy students were shocked to learned that their Spanish teacher and basketball and track coach, Barney Harris, was living a double life. Harris was killed last week in a shootout with a Mexican drug cartel.
Harris and his brother-in-law, Steven Stewart, went to rob the Sinaloa New Generation Cartel’s stash house of money and drugs. Neighbors called police when the heard gunshots. When police arrived, they found Harris dead with multiple gunshot wounds. He was wearing a bulletproof vest but according to authorities, it was no match for the cartel’s ammunition.
They also found 18-year-old Alonso Lara with feet and arms bound behind his back and multiple gunshot wounds. Lara was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Stewart survived the shootout and was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Police also found 2 pound of cocaine and $7,000.
