Looking for a way to celebrate Juneteenth? Check out one of my favorites, Durag Fest!

Durag Fest is an outdoor festival that was co-founded in 2018 by artist Dammit Wesley of BLKMRKT and Lisa Michelle of Ghood Kind. This year’s celebration will include 3 parts all taking place on Saturday, June 19th.
- 12pm - Deep Wave Day Party & Black Vendor Marketplace at Victoria Yards
- 2pm – The “Durag Hall of Fame” at the NASCAR Hall of Fame Plaza
- 7pm - “DU After Dark” or “Adult Swim” at Camp North End
I had an opportunity to chat with Dammit Wesley and asked him why “Durag Fest” is so special? His response, “This is an arts festival in which our attendees, black people, are the walking masterpieces!” What do you wear to Durag Fest? Your best and flyest fit! And of course…a Durag. Go all out and have fun! Check out pictures from Durag Fest below. For more information, follow @duragfest on IG.

Juneteenth is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galvaston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
