Juneteenth is an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.  It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galvaston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
