With the news that Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold will be out several weeks as he nurses an injured shoulder the Panthers are in the market for a quarterback. Backup P.J. Walker who has seen playing time the last two seasons is scheduled to start this Sunday when the Panthers travel to Arizona. But can he handle righting the ship of a team that has lost 4 of its last 5 games? A veteran QB might be the best option. And there is one veteran without a team right now. That player? Cam Newton. Per ESPN, sources have said that Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers plan to meet today, Thursday, November 11th, about a potential homecoming for the team’s former first overall draft pick. Newton joined the Panthers in 2011 and took the team to the Super Bowl in 2015. Injuries and on-the-field struggles lead to the team releasing him following the 2019 season. This was the same time that Ron Rivera was relieved of his head coaching duties and current head coach Matt Rhule joined the organization. Following his departure with the Panthers, Newton played one season with the New England Patriots. The Patriots released the former league MVP this offseason after drafting rookie Mac Jones and naming him the team’s starter.
Cam Newton’s refusal to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and issues with protocols caused a stir this summer but reportedly did not lead to his dismissal. According to a YouTube video, Newton published last month he is fully vaccinated and ready to get back on the field ESPN reported. “Hell yeah, I still want to play football. I still get that urge to go out and perform and do something that I’ve been doing since I was 7 years old.” Newton said in the video.
It will be interesting to see if Newton would be willing to come back to the team that released him. While the roster and organization is vastly different from his time here even though that was just two years ago. He has starting QB experience and could be a great veteran asset to a team that is struggling on offense.
