If your employer came to you and said you could either have an additional week of paid vacation OR you could take the cash equivalent, would you choose more money or more time off? I’d love it if someone asked me that. It’s a choice now for full-time employees of Novant health according to the Charlotte Observer.
Winston-Salem based Novant made the announcement yesterday and is making provisions for part-time workers as well. There are 35,000 people employed by Novant in the Charlotte area. The reason is obvious, our health care workers are worn out. It’s as simple as that. Their time, their health, their resources compromised far beyond what many ever imagined. So many doctors and nurses are starting to reconsider their line of work and health care systems know something is needed to keep them working.

There are benefits to both receiving more money or getting more time off. That extra money sure would be nice but so would the peace of mind you get when you take a mental and physical break from a very stressful job. I’m glad they are getting the choice.
