WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 20: An installation of 857 empty school desks, representing the number of students nationwide who are dropping out every hour of every school day, is on display at the National Mall June 20, 2012 in Washington, DC. The installation was presented by not-for-profit organization College Board to call upon presidential candidates who are running for the White House to make education a more prominent issue in the 2012 campaigns and put the nation’s schools back on track. Parent and students listen up! Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is updating their security measures and it might affect your school.

School officials announced that Hopewell High School and Cochrane Collegiate Academy will be the 1st to distribute clear backpacks to students.  Back in February, the district order thousands of clear backpacks.  Superintendent Earnest Winston says he will be getting feedback from the students about the backpacks.  “We will be deploying the backpacks to every high school so that students have an opportunity to experience what the backpacks look and feel like,” Winston said.  The districts plans on distributing the additional backpack sometime in the spring.

The district also determined that 7 high schools will be receiving body scanners in the next 30 days.  They will also be hiring 53 campus security associates.  The 7 high schools are:

  • Garinger High School
  • Harding University High School
  • Hopewell High School
  • Julius Chambers High School
  • Mallard Creek High School
  • North Mecklenburg High School
  • West Charlotte High School
