World Premiere of The Glorious World of Crowns, Kinks, and Curls
The highly anticipated world premiere of The Glorious World of Crowns, Kinks, and Curls opens this weekend! Yes, it’s about Afros to braids, weddings, and funerals, falling in love to grieving a loss. The collection of monologues and scenes serves as a powerful reminder for Black women. This play features voices of Black women from around the globe recalling hair moments. Every complicated relationship with their hair will take center stage, and we’re here for it. These heartbreaking, heartwarming, and hilarious stories will take audiences on an unparalleled journey into the world of Black womanhood. Check out all performances at The Arts Factory, 1545 W Trade Street, and there’s free parking. Shows open May 5-7, 11-14, and 18-20 Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 pm. Sundays at 2 pm. On May 14th there will be a Talkback that will feature playwright Keli Goff and director Tina Kelly.
The Director is Tina Kelly and she’s a native Charlottean, Tina Kelly is the epitome of homegrown talent. After graduating from UNC-Charlotte with a BA in Theater, she has always thought of herself as a theatermaker. Starting with assistant stage managing with Actors Theater Charlotte and Children’s Theater Charlotte, moving to stage managing for the likes of Three Bone Company and OnQ productions, and many others, Tina has made it her mission to align herself with any and all theater in Charlotte. Keli Goff is the Playwright and internationally recognized as a multi-platform journalist and screenwriter. Goff is best known for chronicling the intersections of politics, pop culture, race, and gender in America. In 2019, she was nominated for two Emmy Awards for her work as a producer on the Netflix film Reversing Roe. Reserving Roe is a documentary chronicling the history of America’s political and legal battles over abortion.
