Since the fall of 2024, three North Carolina public universities have seen their online degree programs grow dramatically, with enrollment increasing 65% through Project Kitty Hawk, a UNC System nonprofit created for adult learners.
Through 'Flight Path' degrees, 3,700 students who previously dropped out have returned to studies at North Carolina Central, Appalachian State, and East Carolina. Students now have access to 14 programs in high-demand fields like cybersecurity, nursing, and business analytics.
Project Kitty Hawk Initiative
North Carolina Central stands out among historically black colleges, landing in the top five nationwide for online bachelor's programs. Their digital learning approach works well for adults juggling busy schedules.
At East Carolina, online education excels, with three graduate programs ranked among the best in America. Working professionals can advance their careers while keeping their current jobs.
Rising 24 spots in U.S. News rankings, Appalachian State's online bachelor's degrees now place among the country's best. They've improved student support services and enhanced their digital learning tools.
Each university brings unique strengths to online education, securing positions in U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings. The schools focus on their core expertise when delivering virtual instruction.
Through Project Kitty Hawk, coursework aligns with North Carolina industry needs. Students gain skills that growing businesses want, helping fill gaps in the state's workforce.
Former students get personalized support to complete their degrees. Advisors help transfer previous credits effectively and select new courses that fit their current lives.
As the initiative grows, other states are taking notice, and considering similar approaches for their adult learners. The combination of flexible scheduling, career-focused skills, and dedicated support could inspire comparable programs nationwide.
