UNC's football squad will sport uniforms from their 1980 title season, a direct request from Bill Belichick. These classic designs mark the team's last ACC championship run.
This uniform change marks Belichick's second major shift since taking charge. He stripped names from practice jerseys this spring. The 1980 season stands tall in UNC history: an 11-1 record pushed the team to tenth in national rankings.
"We have to wait and see. The potential is there," said Kurt Dargis, according to The Sporting News. "There's definitely interest in him outside the typical college football fan."
ESPN plans to broadcast nearly all Tar Heel matchups in 2024. The season starts with a prime-time clash against TCU on Labor Day. TV execs expect viewership spikes similar to Deion Sanders' Colorado debut.
That 1980 squad shined bright. NFL legend Lawrence Taylor led a talented group that sent six players to the pros. Coach Dick Crum steered the team to their last conference crown, earning ACC Coach of the Year honors.
At 73, Belichick steps in to guide a program that's hit the 10-win mark just five times since their glory days. Their most recent peak came in 2015 with an 11-3 run.
The 2025 schedule looks promising for the Tar Heels in ACC play. Fans will catch glimpses of these classic uniforms at select games throughout the year.
