At 8:30 a.m., students walked into the L Building at York Tech's campus. Their schedule blends standard high school work with advanced college studies.
"Our high school students will graduate with their full associate degree. We are breaking down traditional barriers to higher education and expanding the possibilities for every learner," said Dr. Deborah Elder, Superintendent of Rock Hill Schools, to Newsbreak.com.
The school district joined forces with York Tech to speed up students' path to success. After finishing the program, graduates can move on to universities or start their careers with a two-year degree.
"Together, we have created a program that opens doors, accelerates learning, and ensures students are prepared for the workforce or a seamless transition to a four-year degree," said Dr. Stacey Moore, President of York Technical College.
Students don't pay tuition: the S.C. Lottery Assistance Program covers those costs. Families just need to buy books and supplies.
While other schools let high school students take some college classes, Rock Hill's program stands out. Students here can earn a complete associate degree, not just a few credits.
This new option fits into Rock Hill Schools' push to make college more attainable. They picked a small group of 20 students to test the program's success.
The first day of classes kicked off at York Tech's main campus. Students now tackle both high school requirements and college coursework in one place.
