The funds came from several community events backed by the Marino Family. A mix of activities brought in the money: runners hit the streets for the Run Charlie Run 5K, golf clubs swung at the annual tournament, and past stars squared off in the Legends in the South softball game. The Hot Stove Banquet struck gold when sports icon Bo Jackson put his personal items up for bid.
RiverDogs President and GM Dave Echols spoke to MiLB.com: "One of our team's most important missions is to impact the Lowcountry beyond the walls of Riley Park. We're honored to be able to support MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and their life-saving and changing work."
Dr. Mark Scheurer, who leads Children's and Women's Services at MUSC, praised the contribution. "We are incredibly grateful to the RiverDogs and their community of supporters for this record-breaking donation. Every dollar donated helps us provide life-changing care to children and families across the state of South Carolina," he stated.
Since 2017, the baseball club has made yearly gifts to the medical center. Their bond grew stronger in 2020 when the hospital became their main charity partner. Team owner Jeff Goldklang made the check presentation near the dugout, just before the matchup with otesAugusta GreenJackets began.
This gift marks the high point of the team's work in the community. The RiverDogs support many local groups with both money and time throughout each season.
The special moment happened right before the 5:05 p.m. start against Augusta in the season's last home contest.
