Thanks to a partnership with AT&T, a new Connected Learning Center opened Tuesday in uptown Charlotte. Based at the Urban League of Central Carolinas' West 5th Street building, this free hub gives locals access to computers and internet service.

"The AT&T collaboration with the Urban League of the Central Carolinas' Connected Learning Center brings tools for the modern era, for everyone to help succeed in our online world," said AT&T's Regional Director of External Affairs Kathleen Evans, according to WCNC.

The site comes equipped with Dell computers and free AT&T internet. A $50,000 gift from AT&T will support daily operations.

Students at North Lake School of the Arts received Dell laptops at the launch event. This marks the start of the center's plan to put tech in more hands.

Started last year, this project aims to break down barriers to online resources. "To do workshops, to bring other learnings that may not necessarily be here, on the computer," said Robyn Lake Hamilton, who leads the Urban League of Central Carolinas, per WCNC.

Hamilton painted a picture of what's ahead. "It's gonna be for partners who may have various learnings that they're offering, but need a space that will be consistent," she said. "So ... identifying some key partners and say 'hey, we've got this space — school up the street, why don't you bring your teachers here for their day of learning.'"

The first three months will focus on working with community groups. After this trial period, the doors will open wider to welcome more neighbors.

This learning hub fits into AT&T's wider mission to make tech and the internet more reachable for all Americans.
