Tepper Sports & Entertainment owns the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC. They're partnering with the Charlotte Sports Foundation on this bid. Bank of America Stadium joins nearly 50 venues competing to host games.
"Charlotte is a city of growth, innovation, and inclusion, evolving from a regional hub into one of America's premier sports destinations," the bid book reads, per the Charlotte Observer. "With a proven record of hosting world-class events and a strong commitment to equity and opportunity, Charlotte stands ready to deliver a lasting legacy as a host for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2031."
TSE owner David Tepper made his intentions clear back in April — he wanted to host the 2031 tournament. FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited Bank of America Stadium then to promote the FIFA Club World Cup. He called Charlotte a "hot candidate" for hosting duties.
The competition includes Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, Washington, D.C., and New York/New Jersey.
A joint bid from the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica is almost certain to win the hosting rights, since no other countries have submitted proposals for the 2031 event. The United Kingdom is currently the only bidder for the 2035 World Cup. Official confirmation is scheduled to come on April 30, 2026, but actual game sites will likely not be selected for several months.
Bank of America Stadium has welcomed international soccer before. The FIFA Club World Cup came through this past summer. The venue hosted matches during the CONMEBOL Copa America tournament in July 2024.
Charlotte FC calls the stadium home. The MLS franchise just wrapped up its fourth season. The team has earned the city its "soccer city" nickname. The venue will host the 2026 MLS All-Star Game.
FIFA will judge potential hosts on several factors. Infrastructure tops the list. The 75th FIFA Congress in Vancouver will pick hosts on April 30, 2026, according to a release.
The U.S., Mexico, and Canada will share hosting duties for the 2026 Men's World Cup next summer. Charlotte won't host any matches in that tournament.
