Miles joined CMPD on Oct. 15, 2012. Before that, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
"He was a valued member of the Freedom Division and will be remembered for his commitment to service and his positive impact on those around him. He served as a Patrol Training Officer, playing an important role in mentoring and developing new officers," the department wrote on social media, according to Queen City News.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg FOP posted condolences on social media Sunday. So did the CMPD Retirees' Association. As a Patrol Training Officer, Miles guided rookies through their first days on patrol.
Miles leaves behind his wife, Hannah Kelly, and four children. Kelly works in the Property & Evidence Management Division at CMPD.
"Please keep them, along with his extended family and our CMPD family, in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss," CMPD said.
WCNC Charlotte has asked the department for his official portrait. The station also wants more details about memorial plans. WCNC launched its More Than A Number initiative to honor those lost in the line of duty and other tragedies.
The retirees' association cited the department when announcing the death. Both police groups posted tributes to the fallen officer on Jan. 4.
Miles spent more than 13 years with the department. His work in the Freedom Division served the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.
