The I-485 Express Lanes opened in south Charlotte at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, offering a fast option across an 18-mile stretch from I-77 to U.S. 74. Toll rates vary depending on vehicle size, timing, and the day. Users with NC Quick Passes will benefit from lower rates.

Electronic signs will show toll rates before drivers enter the lanes. Initially, transactions might take longer as checks on toll activity are done manually for the first few weeks. Drivers can plan their trips better using the NC Quick Pass toll calculator and by setting up online accounts.

The lanes aim to cut travel times during peak hours and provide a dependable alternate route. Officials said, per WCNC, "Express lanes help cut travel times and offer a quicker option when traffic is heavy."

This $346 million project was designed to tackle traffic issues in the growing Charlotte area. It adds one express lane in each direction, plus upgrades like a new interchange at Weddington Road. Construction began in the summer of 2019 with efforts to limit daytime congestion.

I-485 was identified as critical for express lanes by Charlotte and NCDOT in 2007. These improvements are part of a long-term strategy to reduce congestion.

The project includes a standard lane between Rea Road and Providence Road and features 17 structures with sound barriers along the route.

Dynamic toll pricing prevents overcrowding. Express lanes provide steady travel compared to non-tolled lanes, which only ease congestion for a short time.
