AGE REQUIREMENT 16 & older only
WAIVER INFORMATION If a volunteer registers him/herself for the shift via HFHC’s online registration system, he/she does not need to fill out a hard copy of the STANDARD RELEASE OF LIABILITY FORM (it will have been read and electronically signed). However, If an HFHC staff member or a group leader registered on his/her behalf, please have the volunteer fill out a hard copy waiver beforehand or upon arrival to the site. ALL volunteers should sign the sign-in sheet to confirm attendance.

Lunch is not provided by HFHC unless otherwise advised by HFHC staff. Drinking water and all necessary tools & safety equipment will be provided by HFHC. Closed-toed footwear (work boots or athletic sneakers only) is required. We recommend bringing your own work gloves, if available.

The HFHC staff makes every effort to keep build schedules on track. However, due to occasional inclement weather and necessary adjustments to house schedules, your group’s task is subject to change. We will confirm as the shift date approaches

  • Habitat is not a giveaway program, homeowners purchase their homes with an affordable monthly mortgage and 300 hundred hours of sweat equity.
  • Average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in CLT is now $1,100/mo.; the average Habitat mortgage payment is $492/mo.
  • Because a Habitat home is an asset that will appreciate in value, it provides a very real opportunity for a low-income family to break the cycle of generational poverty.
  • Habitat Charlotte homeowners paid back into the community more than $1 million in property taxes last year and a collective total of more than $14 million in property taxes since 1983.
  • Habitat Charlotte was established in 1983 through the initiative of seven local churches; since then, the ministry has served more than 1,600 families here in Charlotte.
  • Habitat Charlotte homeowners represent 23 different countries of origin.
  • The first Habitat house anywhere in the world that was built by an all-women crew was built here in the Optimist Park neighborhood in 1991; President Jimmy Carter’s wife Rosalyn was one of the crew members who worked on it. Since then, Habitat branches all over the country and around the world have built more than 2,500 houses with all-women crews.
  • Habitat construction volunteers must be at least 16 years old and do not need to have prior construction experience.
  • In addition to building new houses with community volunteers, Habitat Charlotte also completes urgent, critical repairs on older, owner-occupied homes through their Critical Home Repair program.
  • Most common repairs are to fix leaky roofs and unsafe floors, lack of heat, electrical hazards, plumbing hazards, and handicap accessibility issues.
  • Habitat Charlotte has special programs for veterans in both new-construction and critical home repair.
  • Habitat Charlotte has four ReStores: N. Wendover Rd, Wilkinson Blvd. and University City Blvd and Carolina Place Pkwy in Pineville.
  • Profits from the sale of donated items at the Habitat Charlotte ReStores were enough to sponsor the building of 18 new houses last year.
