LISTEN:Missy Elliott Releases New EP ‘Iconology’ And ‘Throw It Back’ Video
On Thursday (Aug. 22), Missy Elliott took to Instagram to announce that she would be releasing new music on Friday (Aug. 23) at midnight.
The release comes three days before Elliott receives her Michael Jackson Vanguard Video Award during the 2019 MTV Music Video Awards, and is a five-track EP where the Grammy Award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer asserts that she’s the icon that she is. Iconology is Missy Elliott’s first project since 2005’s The Cookbook.

On the EP, Elliott reminds her fans and those who came after her that she’s paid her dues. “I did records for Tweet before y’all could even tweet,” Elliott raps on the first track “Throw It Back,” that she also released a video for.

“Throw It Back” and “Cool Off” are upbeat songs that will most likely get people on the dance floor or perhaps playing double dutch. (Check out the video for “Throw It Back” below).
Midway through the EP, Elliott slows it down with “DripDemeanor” featuring Sum1, which contains the only feature and offers her fans her signature sensual and raw R&B lyrics.
“I’m looking for a romance. We could hold hands. Handstand. Do a lap dance. Yea, I want a black man to eat it up like Pac-Man. Boy, you…stop playing,” she raps towards the end of the track.

The EP concludes with “Why I Still Love You,” and the acapella version of the same track, where Elliott sings about questioning why she still loves a lover who she can’t trust and who doesn’t care how she “be feeling inside.”
“This year has been a tremendous year for me…I am humbled and grateful. THANK YOU for allowing me to smell the roses,” Elliott wrote on Instagram when she announced that she would be dropping new music.
“You, my fans, and God are the reason I am here and have celebrated every milestone with me! So, I have a SURPRISE for you… let’s continue the celebration at midnight tonight…I’m dropping a collection of new songs!”
“Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance! Sincerely, Dr. Melissa “Missy” Elliott #Iconology,” Elliott concluded.
