The 55th Annual NAACP Awards are here. The award show celebrating Black excellence in film, television, and music takes place in Los Angeles on March 16 at 8 p.m. on CBS. The show is hosted by Queen Latifah.
Rustin and The Color Purple take the lead in nominations for film. In television, Ayo Edebiri received two nominations for The Bear and her guest role on Abbott Elementary.
In the music categories, Victoria Monet leads with six nominations, and Usher has five nominations.
“The NAACP Image Awards stand as a tribute to their creativity, talent, and dedication to authentic storytelling and are a testament to the richness and diversity of our community,” NAACP President and CEO, said in a statement.
New Edition has been inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, and Usher will be honored with the President’s Award. Frankie Beverly will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“It is our distinct honor to celebrate New Edition and Frankie Beverly — two musical icons that have been instrumental in shaping our cultural landscape with their remarkable talent and enduring influence,” NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a statement. “We recognize the power of their artistry in showcasing the enduring power of Black excellence in the arts.”
Usher At The NAACP Awards
Usher was awarded the President’s Award at this year’s NAACP Awards. The singer spoke about how New Edition paved the way and how his upbringing with his single mother made him who he is as an artist today. Previous musicians who have won the award are Ella Fitzgerald, who was the first person to ever win the award in 1987, Lauryn Hill (1999), John Legend (2016), Jay-Z (2019) and Rihanna (2020).
Usher is also nominated for Entertainer of the Year alongside Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey, and Keke Palmer.
