North Carolina Struggles with Health Disparities
North Carolina’s Public Health Departments are overworked and underfunded on purpose? Not being funny, but if the state’s population grew to an estimated 10-point-5 million people as of July 1st, 2019 for the fourth year in a row by more than 100-thousand people, what brain surgeon do we need to get in place to do something about it? To make a long story short, North Carolina spent fewer and fewer dollars on public health over the past 10 years and local health officials say inconsistent funding has led to reduced staff and resources, which likely worsened the fallout from the pandemic and stay at home orders. Data from Kaiser Health News show spending for the state’s 85 local health departments dipped by more than 27 percent between 2010 and 2018.
