New $39.6M Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library Branch Coming to University City
An impressive new library will welcome visitors in University City on Feb. 8. At 38,000 square feet, this location ranks as the second-largest in Mecklenburg County’s system. The project, running $39.6 million, adds 13,500 square feet more than the old location. County leaders all voted yes to start construction in 2022.
Once it opens, people will find 60,000 items ready to check out, including special collections for book clubs. The team hopes to attract UNC Charlotte students and residents to boost membership.
“The branch was definitely instrumental in piquing my interest in libraries as a professional path,” said Smith, who manages the Cornelius branch, to University City Partners.
Spread across two floors, the building features meeting rooms, children’s areas, and teen spaces ideal for interactive learning. Modern amenities include computer stations, laptops to borrow, and convenient self-checkout kiosks. Books will move through an automated return system, getting them back on shelves quicker than before. Art decorates the space, highlighted by “Stella Terra” — a life-sized horse created by North Carolina artist Anne Lemanski.
The opening day celebration will offer something for everyone: puppet shows for kids, plus face painting and music to create a party atmosphere. Soon after, the Waters Edge development will bring a park and retail spaces nearby.
It all started in 1993 on East W.T. Harris Boulevard. Back then, community members raised $15,000 to fill the shelves with books.
Since 1901, this library system has evolved and grown. A major milestone came in 1956 when it opened to everyone, followed by new branches and a fresh Main Library that year.
