With the holidays in full swing, the shopping frenzy has begun. According to reports, Americans have already spent over $70 billion dollars in the last month on holiday gifts — that’s both in-store and online. But, there are some who may choose to avoid the traditional path for shopping and opt to buy, sell, or trade for items.

I personally, am all for skipping the malls and heading straight to my local thrift shop.  One of the biggest thrift markets is actually making its way to Charlotte. ThriftCon is a giant traveling fashion market that will set up shop Sunday, December 3, 2023, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at The Park Expo and Conference Center on East Independence Boulevard. The concept of selling secondhand items isn’t new. It has evolved over the years. From society’s perspective, there was a time when receiving secondhand items was frowned upon and was viewed as an option for the less fortunate. Now, American culture has adopted a more environmentally conscious attitude.

There is more concern about the impact fashion has on the environment. So why not help protect our environment through the sustainable use of clothing? I can still enjoy fashion by repurposing items, thus bringing new life to older pieces of clothing without the hefty price tag of a new piece.

Here are a few thrift shops I find worth the visit in Charlotte.

  • G.W. (A Goodwill Boutique)

My new favorite boutique where you can grab a vintage jacket and pick up some lunch. A cafe is conveniently located next door, so that you can grab a bite before or after your thrifting haul.

  • J.T. Posh

A great little spot in south Charlotte with all “the things” that make holiday shopping perfect! This is my go-to or holiday attire — from cute holiday sweaters to glitzy holiday glam.

  • Stash Pad

What I like about this spot is it isn’t just for the ladies. I managed to snag a nice ensemble for my brother. I wanted to add a little more flare to his style!

  • East 8th Vintage

This shop is vintage at its best! A little leather number here caught my eye! And my cousin who is a reading enthusiast, I’m sure would fall in love with the variety of books here.

  • Assistance League of Charlotte

Now, THIS is  more of my mom’s speed. It has items of sophistication like a fur coat, mixed in with some really cool furniture and dining ware. I think I saw some ‘real’ china!

  • Hush Consignment

Nothing ‘quiet’ about this thrift shop. It has all the makings of something special for that lady in your life. From clothes, handbags, shoes and jewelry

  • Uptown Cheapskate

I actually discovered this gem in my hometown of Greensboro quite a while ago, but glad it’s closer to home. It’s amazing some of the treasures you can find in here and I get to bring my vintage items in to trade, too!

  • Moxie Mercantile

This is my go-to for cool accessories as gifts. Candles, unique vintage jewelry, vases, art and even sexy martini glasses are here for the gifting!
