Samuel L. Jackson will depict George Clinton in a new upcoming biopic about record executive Neil Bogart. Music from Parliament, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Curtis Mayfield, and KISS will be featured in the film, titled Spinning Gold, as Deadline reports.
Jazmine Sullivan will portray Knight, Jason Derulo will depict Ron Isley, D.L. Hughley will play Bootsy Collins, Kenan Thompson will portray Berry Gordy, and Jay Pharaoh plays WBLS radio DJ Frankie Crocker.
Steven Strait and Sam Harris will portray KISS leaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Neil Patrick Harris will depict their co-manager, Bill Aucoin.
Bogart, a New York City native, debuted in the 1960s as a singer, prior to becoming a record executive at Cameo-Parkway Records and Buddha Records. He later founded Casablanca Records in 1973 and signed KISS to the record company that same year.
In 1974, Bogart signed Clinton’s Parliament to the imprint, and he became known for promoting funk and disco artists such as Donna Summer and the Village People.
He died due to complications from cancer and lymphoma at age 39. Spinning Gold, which is written and directed by Bogart’s son, Timothy Scott Bogart, will begin production in Montreal on July 16.
