Getting To Know The Panthers Coaching Candidates
The Carolina Panthers are stepping up their efforts to find a new head coach with several interviews this week.
Matt Rhule — The Baylor University head coach will sit down with Panthers officials today. A former Penn State linebacker, Rhule has spent the majority of his coaching career on the college level but did have a short stint in the NFL as the New York Giants offensive line coach in 2012. He is expected to interview with the Giants on Tuesday.
Perry Fewell — The Carolina Panthers interim head coach makes his case to have the interim tag removed from his name on Wednesday. Fewell brings a lot of experience to the table, with a coaching career that extends back to 1985. Fewell most recently served as defensive backs coach for the Panthers.
Eric Bieniemy — The current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator is scheduled for an interview on Thursday. Bieniemy, a former running back, played nine seasons in the NFL with the Chargers, Bengals, and Eagles. Panthers owner David Tepper has stated that he would prefer an offensive specialist as head coach, leading many to believe that Bieniemy has an edge.
Kevin Stefanski — Coming off a huge wild card win Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator is expected to meet with the Panthers this week, possibly on Thursday. He has spent his entire NFL career with the Vikings and will be flying high after the spectacular overtime drive that knocked the Saints out of the playoffs.
Josh McDaniels — With his team out of the playoff picture, the Patriots offensive coordinator has plenty of time for coaching interviews, and is scheduled to meet with the Panthers on Friday. McDaniels is no stranger to Super Bowl wins (six with the Pats) and is reportedly the highest-paid OC in the NFL. He is also interviewing with the Giants this week.
Mike McCarthy — The former Green Bay Packers head coach has already interviewed with the Panthers (twice by some accounts). McCarthy has one Super Bowl win under his belt but did not coach in the NFL during 2019.
