How The Relatives Helps Children In Need of Transportation
Kevin wasn’t looking for a hand-out, but he desperately needed a hand-up. It took a bus pass to change his life. When Kevin came to The Relatives, he was struggling and needed help. Kevin had a job as a parking attendant, but he didn’t have a place to live or access to reliable transportation. Kevin worked as often as he could, and to ensure he never missed a shift, he would usually sleep on the street near his job.
The Relatives helped Kevin secure an interview with Delta Airlines and covered the transportation to his interview where he was offered a job as a baggage handler. Reliable transportation still presented a barrier to Kevin’s success, though. There was simply no way Kevin could maintain, both, his job as a parking attendant and his new job as a baggage handler. The Relatives provided Kevin with a weekly 10-ride bus pass. The barrier of reliable transportation was removed, and Kevin was able to successfully maintain both of his jobs and has since saved up enough money to purchase a car.
Kevin is just one of over 3,000 youth and young adults who rely on The Relatives for relief, acceptance, and empowerment. Every month, The Relatives gives an average of 50 bus passes to youth and young adults. Access to reliable transportation ensures young people can maintain stable employment, receive tailored, comprehensive support, reach their goals, and, ultimately, be independent.
