U.S. News and World Report selected 150 major cities in their search for the best places to live. In order to be chosen the place had to have a good value. It also had to be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market, and a high quality of life. And guess what, this time Charlotte beat out Raleigh.

Why does the publication put together a best cities list? They say the purpose is to help their readers make the most informed decisions possible when choosing a place to dig in roots. And they go to multiple highly credible sources to gather data. They use the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Labor plus U.S. News own internal sources.

A large percentage of the determining factors came down to quality of life. And just exactly how does one quantify that? Well, you look at things like crime rates, quality of education, well-being, commuter time, and quality and availability of health care.
5 North Carolina cities make the Best Places to Live list’s top 50. And 2 in South Carolina. Charlotte, North Carolina came in at number 5 on the list. Raleigh, North Carolina was 6; Asheville, North Carolina came in at 17. Greensboro, North Carolina ranked 23 on the list and Hickory, North Carolina is 26th. South Carolina is represented in the top 50 best places to live too. Greenville, South Carolina came in 4th and Charleston, South Carolina came in 13.
