Salt-N-Pepa Reportedly Responds To Spinderella’s Lawsuit
The saga continues between Salt-N-Pepa and Spinderella.
As we previously reported, Spinderella reportedly filed a lawsuit against her longtime groupmates Salt-N-Pepa for fraud, breach of contract, and trademark infringement, and now sources close to the iconic rappers have spoken out, reports TMZ.
Salt-N-Pepa thinks that Spinderella’s lawsuit is about her own insecurities, “that she feels like a third wheel,” according to sources connected with the group.
They’re claiming that the DJ has felt that way ever since 2007’s Salt-N-Pepa Show on VH1 where Spin was only featured as a guest.
According to Spinderella, she got cheated when S-N-P excluded her from the show.
Spin said that she was also promised one-third of Salt-n-Pepa’s fee for the program–although she received an occasional guest spot, the DJ was given less than what she was promised, according to the lawsuit.
The legendary DJ also claimed that she wasn’t compensated in any capacity for their highly-raved performance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.
Spinderella, who expressed some of her grievances with Salt-N-Pepa on their reality TV show alongside R&B group SWV, Ladies Night, stated that she was told that her fellow groupmates garnered more than $600,000 in royalties in the last decade and that she hasn’t received an ounce of the same revenue.
However, the sources claim that Spinderella isn’t entitled to any royalties in her contract, which includes the $125k that the DJ said she was owed from the 1999 Best Of album.
Spinderella was supposedly always compensated as an independent contractor, but Salt-N-Pepa allegedly always made sure that Spin got the “finest accommodations” alongside her paycheck.
The sources stated that in regards to the television show that aired on VH1, the producers didn’t want Spinderella involved and Salt and Pepa had no control over that.
Salt-N-Pepa thinks that Spin’s “bitterness” is a result of talk shows regularly requesting only Salt and Pepa for interviews.
According to the sources, the Salt-N-Pepa brand is owned by Salt and Pepa, not DJ Spinderella, so her trademark infringement claims in the lawsuit are baseless.
The group also claims that they haven’t used her name or likeness once since she made the decision to leave the group.
Salt-N-Pepa claims that they went out of their way to make sure that Spin was highlighted during their appearance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and that no one got paid for the gig, which Spinderella was already aware of.
