Jay-Z was humbled by the recognition as he never thought hip-hop would ever receive such high honor.
“Thank you, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for this incredible honor,” Hov said adding per Revolt. “And you know, growing up, we didn’t think we could be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We were told that hip hop was a fad. Much like punk rock, it gave us this anticulture, this subgenre, and there were heroes in it.”
He then continued expressing gratitude to fellow artists and his loved ones for their support and artistry.
“When thinking about what I was going to say tonight, these heroes just kept coming to my mind, Rakim and Big Daddy Kane and KRS-One and Chuck D, and, of course, a fellow inductee, LL Cool J.” The rapper also went on to thank his mother, Gloria Carter, his sister, Annie, Roc Nation co-founder Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, and DJ Clark Kent for their contributions to his career.
The Grammy-winner also surprised many when he mentioned his former business partner and Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash on being a moving force in hip-hop despite their history. “Shout out to Dame, I know we don’t see eye to eye, but I can never erase your accomplishments. And I appreciate you and I thank you for that. Shout out to Biggs. He was one of the most honorable people I’ve ever met and we created something that will probably never be duplicated. I appreciate you guys. Thank you for our journey. Thank you. Thank you for your contribution to this journey.”
Along with Jay-Z, hip-hop legend LL Cool J and Grammy-winning singer Tina Turner were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
