Today is Space Exploration Day: 10 Movies to Watch About Space!

I love Space. I’m actually terrified of it, but love it at the same time. Space Exploration Day is today, July 20, and this annual holiday commemorates the first-ever manned mission to the Moon by the United States. 

So how did this day come to be? Well, Thanks to the brave American Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on July 20th of 1969, the United States made a huge milestone by putting the first human life forms on our glorious moon. Now, we celebrate their great success with Space Exploration Day which was proclaimed a holiday by United States President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

A fun fact about today is that it is also sometimes referred to as Moon Day. The reason being is because it encourages people to learn more about space exploration and space sciences. I don’t think I will be traveling to the great frontier anytime soon, but one way I will be celebrating this fun holiday today is by watching some of my favorite space infused films. • “The First Man” (2018)

  A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

• “The Martian” (2015)

  The movie portrays a realistic view of the climate and topography of Mars, based on NASA data, and some of the challenges NASA faces as we prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet in the 2030s.

• “Arrival” (2016)

  Another sad one, but if you love Space you must watch this. Amy Adams plays a linguist and works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.
• “High Life” (2018)

  This one is a sad one I must admit. Watch as aA father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation.

• “October Sky” (1999)

  An oldie but a goodie, I love the movie "October Sky." This movie is based on the true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father's wishes. It also stars my man, Jake Gyllenhaal!

• “Gravity” (2013)

  Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the stars of the 2013 film, "Gravity" and y0u will be on total edge watching this Space film. Watch as two astronauts work together to survive after an accident leaves them stranded in space.
• “Interstellar” (2014)

  Alright, alrght, alright. Wrong movie, but same star. This movie tells the story of a team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival.

• “Ad Astra” (2019)

  Astronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.

• “Hidden Figures” (2016)

  Share

  This was a great movie about NASA and how women influenced the Space program. "Hidden Figures" is the retelling of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson’s and their work at NASA. The movie spotlights their vital contribution as mathematicians to getting John Glenn to space and back in one piece.
• “Apollo 13” (1995)

  If you don't love this movie, I can't be your friend. Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon is a dream cast in my opinion. Watch as NASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy.
