Florida Governor Desantis Turns Controversial Statement Into A Koozie
A lot of Florida residents LOVE their governor and in particular his response throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. His name has been thrown around by many republicans as a 2024 running mate with Donald Trump. Some even want him to run on his own. Love him or hate him he definitely invokes an emotional response from a lot of people. Now DeSantis is revisiting a controversial comment he made by putting it on a koozie. Let’s face it there’s nothing like a good quote to earn a politician a place in the history books. For President John F. Kennedy, it was, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” For Franklin Delano Roosevelt, it was, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” And for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, it’s, “How the hell am I going to be able to drink a beer with a mask on?”
DeSantis’ now-famous comment on wearing protective masks has made its way onto drink-insulating koozies, which the governor is selling on his campaign website. A rep for the Florida Republican Party says selling the merchandise is a “great opportunity to have some lighthearted fun and give his supporters a chance to feel even more connected with his message of keeping Florida free.” But not everyone agrees. “We have a governor who has not taken COVID seriously from the very beginning,” says Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman. “You know, he is essentially right now treating it like a joke. He’s got campaign merchandise on his website … and we’ve had nearly 40,000 Floridians die of COVID.”

Additionally, another koozie option on his website says “Don’t Fauci My Florida”. Is DeSantis selling this koozie in bad taste? He is certainly appealing to his base and they love him. I’m not one to get offended by much and can take a little lighthearted joke. That being said I can understand if you lived in Florida and had lost someone to COVID that it might come off differently.
