Chris Rock Called Out Over Wrong Will Smith Movie Roles From Special
People are calling out Chris Rock over getting a fact about Will Smith wrong for a joke he made during his Netflix special, Selective Outrage. During Saturday night’s live comedy event, the comedian addressed all the biggest differences between him and the King Richard star.
In the special, Rock compares Smith’s “significantly” bigger size difference that he has on him (Smith is 6’2,” Rock is 5’10”). He then points out how Smith is also much more buff than him, saying that he does most of his movies with his shirt off. Meanwhile, “You’ve never seen me do a movie with my shirt off. If I’m in a movie getting open heart surgery, I got on a sweater.”
Comparing other movie roles between the two, Smith played Muhammed Ali while Rock played Pookie in New Jack City. Then, in Pootie Tang, was a piece of corn. “S—, even in animation, this motherf—er’s bigger — I’m a zebra, he’s a shark!” This is in reference to the 2004 movie Shark Tale.
Fans were quick to point out that Smith did not play a shark. One person, who provided side-by-side photos said of the Dreamworks characters, “In the Madagascar series Rock does indeed play a zebra named Marty. But in Shark Tale, Will Smith plays a bluestreak cleaner wrasse not a shark.”
They added, “Conceptually the joke is about how much stronger Will Smith is physically than Chris Rock, but I think a full-sized zebra would actually do very well against a small fish in fight. And a disservice to Jack Black, Robert De Niro, and Michael Imperioli who did play the sharks in it.”
Another person said, “Did Chris Rock even watch Shark Tale? Will Smith voices a FISH. Unbelievable. He should be so embarrassed.” Meanwhile, someone called the comedian a “f—ing buffoon.”
Many users said things like, “Lmao I’m just laughing at how Chris Rock never actually watched Shark Tale.” Another wrote, “Screaming ‘will smith doesn’t even play the shark in shark tale, jack black does’ as fbi agents rush to shove me into a black suv and disappear me.”
“Chris rock is getting flamed in the comments but no one has mentioned that this is not a shark,” wrote one person with a photo of Smith’s character.
