Pharrell Williams Is Louis Vuitton’s Next Men’s Creative Director
Louis Vuitton has tapped Pharrell Williams to be their next men’s creative director. The French luxury fashion house made the announcement on Tuesday (Feb. 14).
“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men’s Creative Director,” said Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO in a statement per CNN. “His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”
Williams’ appointment is effective immediately, and his first collection will debut in June during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.
The news comes a little more than a year since Virgil Abloh's death in November 2021 following a private battle with cancer. Abloh made history as the first Black artistic director for Louis Vuitton when he was appointed in 2018. He was known for bringing streetwear to the largest stages in the fashion world.
Williams is known for being creative in both the music and fashion world. The 13-time Grammy winner has partnered with Tiffany & Co., Moncler and Adidas. He also co-founded a streetwear label called the Billionaire Boys Club in 2003 with fashion designer Nigo. In 2004, he worked with Marc Jacobs—the brand’s creative director to create a line of sunglasses. According to GQ, Abloh re-issued the collection.
“Pharrell Williams is a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion – establishing himself as a cultural global icon over the past twenty years,” an Instagram post shared to both Williams and the fashion house said of the announcement. “The way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores, aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a Cultural Maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit, and entrepreneurship.”
