Drake To Celebrate Toronto Raptors Win: ‘Two Songs Dropping Tomorrow’
The Toronto Raptors won their first NBA championship against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, June 13. Drake, one of their most high profile fans, was in a celebratory mood after the victory.
The Raptors won with a 114-110 victory in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, resulting in the Canadian team taking home the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the first time in franchise history, as reported by ESPN.
Thanks to point guard Kyle Lowry, who scored the Raptors first 11 points of the game, Toronto had an early lead. But in the first half alone, Golden State swiftly responded and the Raptors and Golden State exchanged 14 point leads.
Fred VanVleet assisted in the Raptors pulling ahead with his clutch shotmaking. He shot a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3 minutes, 44 seconds left, putting the Raptors ahead. That shot sent Toronto on their way to the Championship title that many thought the Raptors would never win.
“It was a heck of a 12 months,” Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. “I just try to take things as they come. Didn’t look too far ahead. Obviously when we made some additions to the team, we thought we could be good, but we had no idea what the health status was and all those things.
“You just got to go take the guys you got and go play and manage it the best you can,” Nurse explained.
The Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said that Toronto “earned” the championship.
“They’re a fantastic basketball team,” Kerr said. “Great defensively, share the ball, play a beautiful style, a lot of great two-way players and a lot of veteran players who have been in this league contributing for a long time, so I’m very happy for them.
“Winning a championship is the ultimate in this league, and they have got a lot of guys who have earned this. … They are a worthy champion,” Kerr continued.
Toronto rapper Drake, who had been rooting for his home team throughout the entire series, trolling and taunting Golden State players, was nothing short of excited after the Raptors won.
Drake took to Instagram Live after the game to congratulate Toronto, and announce that he would be dropping two songs on Friday, June 14.
“Congratulations! Two songs dropping tomorrow. A championship for the city of Toronto for the first time ever. Congrats. Well deserved,” Drake said.
