Students Facing Housing Crisis at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Hey everyone, my name is Toren Cole and I am the new intern at Power98. I am a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and I have to let you know about this issue.
UNCC Housing Crisis
There is a housing crisis going on at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and we need to talk about it. As students are applying for housing and getting ready for the 2024-25 school year, some have been declined housing or not even given the chance to apply. Spaces are filling up quickly and it’s causing an issue for students. Some students are even paying other students just to put their names down on the housing application. On the YikYak app, one student wrote, “I will Venmo $100 to someone with an early timeslot to list me as their preferred roommate”. Students are now contemplating transferring schools for their education.
As you know freshmen are guaranteed housing. If there are too many freshmen, then what happens to sophomores, juniors, and seniors? Some students reside out of state or live hours away and cannot commute every day/every other day to school. What if the student does not have transportation or have the funds to live off campus?
Students are outraged! Many do not know if they will be able to live on campus. This means they will have to turn to more expensive options. As students are looking at the different apartments around campus, another issue presents itself. Is it okay for those complexes to jack up their rates as they know students are in need? Students feel betrayed by the school as they currently have no solution for this current housing crisis. Hopefully when it gets closer to the next school year the returning students can find a place to live on or an affordable option near campus to continue their education. Many students are not sure what is going to happen, but we’re hoping for the best.
