I Think I Ruined Yoga Class
Last year I decided I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle. I started eating right and working out. It was working. I lost 20 pounds! Then Thanksgiving hit and Christmas and the New Year. I lost my momentum but I was determined to get back on track. So yesterday, my friend invited me to go to Yoga Class with him and I gladly accepted. I was excited about not only getting back in the gym but trying something new.
I got to the gym and my friend looked at me and said “Now this isn’t your regular Yoga class Jess! It’s more of a meditation class.” WAIT WHET?!?!?
The proper name for the class is “Yoga Nidra”.
Yoga Nidra is often referred to as “guided relaxation”. While laying on the floor in a comfortable position the instructor will guide you through this practice, which brings you to the deepest stages of relaxation, while still maintaining full consciousness. Yoga nidra benefits your body and mind and may help reduce stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and PTSD. The benefits are Reduces Stress, Improved duration and quality of sleep, Improve memory, and Decrease anxiety.
Ummmmm, am I supposed to mediate my waist into shrinking?!?
I was there so I gave it a try. I’m not gonna lie, when I walked in I immediately thought, “what have I gotten myself into”. People were laying on the floor on pillows. Some had blankets covering themselves. (imagine those little pallets you used to make when you spent the night at your friend’s house). There was soft “yoga-ish” music playing and the instructor had a relaxing calming voice. He barely spoke though. The majority of the class was us just laying there….relaxing, meditating. Then it happened.
In my attempt to meditate, I started choking yall…Bad and Loud! To the point, I had to get up and run out of the class. I was so embarrassed. I just messed up about 30 people’s state of Zen because something went down the wrong pipe.
Needless to say, I did NOT return to the class. BUT, I do plan on going back. Maybe I didn’t have my pillows positioned correctly. Maybe I needed a blanket like the other people. I don’t know but I will not let that experience deter me from getting my Inner Peace On!
Do you meditate or do Yoga Nidra? If so, head on over to my IG page @heymsjessica and give me some tips on how to make it through the class because before I started choking, a sister was STRUGGLING! LOL! I could not turn my brain off.
