Who Was Pop Smoke?
The Culture was rocked earlier today when we learned about the tragic death of rapper, Pop Smoke.
It is being reported that the 20-year-old was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in what appears to be a home invasion robbery. Around 4:30 AM, 2 men wearing hoodies and masks broke into his Hollywood Hills home and fired multiple shots, striking and critically wounding the rapper. The men were seen fleeing on foot and no arrest have been made.
When the news broke many took to social media to express their condolences, while others asked “Who?” Fair question; some might not be familiar with the rapper as he was just beginning his rise to fame. So, let’s answer the question, “Who Was Pop Smoke?”
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Pop Smoke was a rapper that was well known on the New York Drill Music scene with an unforgettable voice. (Think rough and soothing at the same time.) He dropped his 1st hit “Welcome To The Party” in April 2019. It was the lead single off his debut mixtape “Meet the Woo”, which was released in July 2019. Nicki Minaj and Skepta were featured on 2 remixes for the song.
In February 2020, Pop Smoke released his 2nd mixtape “Meet The Woo 2” with Quavo, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Fivio Foreign, and Lil Tjay all making appearances. The following week, he released a deluxe edition with 3 additional songs and appearances from Nav, Cunna, and PnB Rock.
Unfortunately, Pop Smoke was tragically killed just a few days after learning that “Meet The Woo 2” debuted at #7 on the Billboard album charts and just 2 weeks before he was scheduled to begin his national tour.
The Hip Hop community lost a star today. R.I.P Pop Smoke! (WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE & CONTENT)
