Canceling Standardized Testing
Do you think that standardized testing is out of date to reach our children in their formative years? Most importantly, should school districts continue standardized testing during a pandemic? If standardized testing created a gap for students of color, seems it would only get worse, right? The National Education Association president Becky Pringle discusses why the NEA is calling on the Department of Education to reduce standardized testing and how these tests are particularly detrimental for students and community of color.
If students perform poorly on a standardized test it’s increased pressure from parents and peers to do better and work smarter. Studies show that this can lead to students resenting learning and believing that they are worse than everyone else because of their low scores.
Standardized tests may help schools determine where a student lies on the education spectrum, but they do not accurately represent every students full potential depending on their ability to take tests, and excel on them. What do you think about standardized testing?
