The newest MLS team, The Charlotte FC, began a new era in the Queen City this past weekend by playing their 1st home match against the LA Galaxy and this match did not disappoint as far as attendance. Although they lost 1-0 to the Galaxy 74,479 fans showed to support their new soccer team easily breaking the 73,019 MLS record set by Atlanta United in 2018.
The excitement and energy for the team were unparalleled with fans beginning to tailgate at 1 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. match against the LA Galaxy. Los Angeles outshot Charlotte 21-5. The match was tied for the 77 minutes but Charlotte ending up losing 1-0. During the second half of the match, there was a bit of a scary moment after a cellular antenna slipped from its mount. 20 rows of section 520 had to be cleared out. There were no injuries and fans in those rows were relocated. In one of the best moments of the match, the speaker system went out during the singing of the national anthem but the almost 75k in attendance sang in unison to finish the anthem.
