CMS Announces 4 New Principals
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced 4 new principal appointments yesterday.
- Dr. Carla Mathis was named principal at Druid Hills Academy.
- Katharine Bonasera was the name principal at Winding Springs Elementary.
- Penelope Crisp was named principal at Matthews Elementary.
- Rachel Corn was named principal at Reedy Creek Elementary.

Dr. Carla Mathis was named principal at Druid Hills Academy. Mathis was principal at Alcorn Middle since 2017 and an assistant principal at Lower Richland High from 2016 to 2017, both in Richland School District, Columbia, S.C. She was with CMS as a teacher at Coulwood Middle from 2015 to 2016, as an academic facilitator and teacher at West Mecklenburg High from 2001 to 2015 and as a teacher at Olympic High from 2000 to 2001. Mathis was a teacher at Chester Middle, Chester County School District, Chester, S.C., from 1998 to 2000. She has a bachelor’s degree in English education from Claflin University, Orangeburg, S.C., and a post-master’s certificate in school administration. Mathis has a doctoral degree in educational leadership in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix, Arizona.
Katharine Bonasera was named principal at Winding Springs Elementary. Bonasera was assistant principal at Hickory Grove Elementary from 2012 to 2014. She was also a New Leaders resident principal at the school from 2011 to 2012 and a teacher at Shamrock Gardens Elementary from 2007 to 2011. Bonasera has a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Ill., and a graduate certificate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Penelope Crisp was named principal at Matthews Elementary. She was principal at Lansdowne Elementary since 2014. Crisp was a literacy facilitator at Endhaven Elementary from 2012 to 2014 and a principal at Clear Creek Elementary from 2010 to 2012. She held two positions at Torrence Creek Elementary, as a principal from 2008 to 2010 and assistant principal from 2005 to 2008. Crisp was an assistant principal at Morehead Elementary from 2003 to 2005 and in the Principal Fellows Program at Windsor Park Elementary form 2001 to 2003. She was a teacher at Lansdowne Elementary from 1997 to 2001. Crisp has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in educational leadership and curriculum from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Rachel Corn was named principal at Reedy Creek Elementary. Corn was principal at Cochrane Collegiate Academy since 2013 and was also principal at Coulwood Middle from 2010 to 2013. She was a learning community resource teacher for the Central Secondary Zone in 2010 and for the East Learning Community from 2007 to 2010. She was a teacher at Independence High from 2005 to 2007 and in Kannapolis City Schools from 1996 to 2005. Corn has a bachelor’s degree in education from the State University of New York, Oswego, N.Y., and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of North Carolina.
