Just A Little Charlotte History
In 1983, Harvey B. Gantt is confirmed as Charlotte’s first Black mayor. Already, he was the first Black understudy admitted to Clemson University where he earned a four-year college education in engineering.
Gantt’s design firm engages with numerous Charlotte ventures including the Charlotte Transportation Center, ImaginOn kids’ exhibition hall, and UNC Charlotte’s Center City building.
His political vocation rouses other people who might become Black firsts, similar to our 44th president. He also has a museum here in Charlotte named after him in his honor.
